Insomnia is one type of sleep disorder. Person with insomnia find it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep, or both.

Person with this condition often don’t feel refreshed when they wake up from sleeping, either. This can lead to fatigue and many other symptoms.

As said above, It is a sleep disorder which is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep.

Person with insomnia have one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Difficulty in falling asleep
  • Waking up often during the night and having trouble going back for sleep
  • Waking up early in the morning
  • Feeling tired on waking

Insomnia is the most common from all sleep disorders, according to the American Psychiatric Association (APA).

In fact, the American Psychiatric Association states that about one-third of all adults report insomnia symptoms. But only 6 to 10 percent of all adults have symptoms that severe enough for them to be diagnosed with this disorder.

According to guidelines from a physicians group, Individual with this disorder is difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, even when a person has the chance to do so.

Individual with insomnia can feel dissatisfied with their sleep and usually experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue,
  • Low energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Mood disturbances
  • Decreased performance in work

Doctors perform a clinical diagnosis of insomnia if both of these criteria apply:

  • Sleep difficulties during at least three nights a week for a minimum of three months.
  • Sleep difficulties creating severe distress or functional difficulties in a person’s life.

Types of Insomnia

There are two types of insomnia disorder: primary insomnia and secondary insomnia.

Primary insomnia:

Primary insomnia means a person is having sleep problems that are not directly associated with any other health condition or problem.

Secondary insomnia:

Secondary insomnia means that a person is having sleep problems because of other problems, such as a asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, or heartburn, pain, medication they are taking, or a substance they are using like alcohol..
